Dating your Cammann Binaural

NOTE: THIS PAGE CONTAINS GENERAL INFORMATION ON THE IMPROVEMENTS OF THE CAMMANN STETHOSCOPE WHICH MAY HELP IN DETERMINING THE AGE OF A PARTICULAR PIECE. IT IS NOT INTENDED TO BE AN OFFICIAL GUIDE

As mentioned before, the Cammann is the most collected and most widely recognized antique binaural stethoscope. This piece was originated in 1855 and was made continuously through 1895. Here are a few tips on how to date your piece:

1. Look for the Maker's mark. You can then go to a book such as Edmonson's (for American makers) or Bennion (for British makers) and get a rough idea of when it was made.

2. The original models had an elastic band which held the ear-pieces together. These are becoming increasingly harder to find. However, the elastic band was used until the 1890's, so it is somewhat difficult to date these.

3. If you model has a spring between the ear-pieces, this was a post-1875 model.

4. If there are two tubes, one sliding into the other, holding the earpieces together, this is post -1885. This was the final modification of the tension apparatus.
