THE HISTORY OF THE STETHOSCOPE

From Laennec to Littmann

In 1816, a young physician in Paris made what may be the most important discovery in the history of physical diagnosis. The story about this discovery is the history of the development and evolution of the stethoscope.  Explore with us not only the images of the instruments and their inventors, but also the historic articles about ascultation and percussion, and the history of the phsicians and the places where they developed these instruments of physical diagnosis.

These pages contain many links to articles and photos. Please be sure to take your time to fully explore the history of this fascinating instrument.

Please start with the invention of the monaural stethoscope by clicking on the blue print. You can return to the table of contents at any time during the tour to acess any part of the site where you wish to spend more time.
